Congress calls for immediate re-voting in disputed Samaguri by-election | Guwahati News

Congress demands re-polling in Samagura

Guwahati: Leader of the Opposition in Assam and a senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia wrote to the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday requesting re-polling in the respective polling stations in Assam’s Samaguri constituency.
Samaguri is one of the five Assembly seats where by-elections were held on November 13 amid several incidents of clashes between Congress and BJP workers. In the pre-election violence in Samaguri, one BJP worker was killed and vehicles of both parties were attacked. The Congress alleged that their supporters were denied access to certain polling booths to “help the BJP candidate”.
In an “urgent memorandum” sent to the Chief Election Commissioner, Saikia called for urgent and immediate intervention demanding re-polling in various Samaguri booths, alleging massive rigging, booth hijacking and voter intimidation during polling.
While the BJP refused to accept any allegation of its people being involved in the vandalism, the Congress leader claimed in a memorandum that on October 15, when the elections were announced, several Congress MLAs were attacked and their vehicles damaged when they were passing near the local BJP. office
The memorandum said that there were several incidents of booth capture and rigging by BJP supporters at various polling stations in Samaguri on the polling day. Saikia said that the election agent of the Congress candidate Tanzil Hussain immediately informed the returning officer reporting cases of booth hijacking and tampering in booth numbers: 3, 4, 5, 6, 193, 194, 195. , and 196 of Samagur constituency . Saikia called on the commission to hold re-voting in the respective polling stations based on the results of the investigation conducted by the commission.
