A video shows a driver fatally hitting an elderly man in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Police in Fort Lauderdale are searching for the driver of a Jeep Wrangler that struck and killed an elderly man early Sunday morning, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Authorities said the incident happened around 2:06 a.m. in the 100 block of Northwest First Street, where 73-year-old Esperant Lahens was found dead at the scene.

According to FLPD, a dark-colored Jeep Wrangler was parked in the area when Lahens laid down on the ground in front of the vehicle.

Authorities said surveillance video shows the three people returning to the Jeep and the driver driving forward, hitting Lahens, who was lying by the side of the road. Police said investigators have not determined whether the driver was aware of Lahens’ presence.

Around 6:25 a.m., a passerby found Lahens unresponsive and contacted authorities. Police say the driver has not been charged at this time, but they continue to seek information for the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Russell Brown Traffic Homicide Unit at 954-828-5754 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
