A Somerset man has been charged with “cruel neglect” of a dog, authorities say

Authorities say a Somerset County man has been charged after he allegedly took a neglected dog to the vet.

Wilmer Barron, 69, of Jefferson Township, took his dog to the Somerset Animal Medical Center in July, where staff notified authorities, police said.

Investigators say the dog had open wounds, urine-soaked fur and was covered in thousands of maggots.

Officials say the dog was also severely dehydrated and suffering from Lyme disease, prompting veterinarians to consider euthanizing the animal.

According to court records onlineBarron is charged with three counts of animal cruelty.

The preliminary meeting is scheduled for November 21.
