70-year-old woman found dead in river weeks after Helen hits North Carolina

INGALLS, NC (WBTV/Grey News) – A Tennessee woman who went missing during Hurricane Helen has been found dead.

Avery County authorities say 70-year-old Charlene Wilber has been identified as the deceased person found Oct. 23.

Deputies said they found Wilber’s body while conducting a search operation on the North Te River in an area accessible only by foot.

A 70-year-old man has been missing from Buck Hill Campground, about 3 miles north of Ingalls, since September 27.

Wilber was one of three missing in Avery County, according to authorities.

On Wednesday, state officials announced that Helen’s death toll in North Carolina had passed 100.
