Penticton High School students kick off fundraising for SOWINS with winter clothing collection – Penticton News

Again Penticton High School’s We’re For Her Club is collecting warmth to help those in need this winter.

On Monday, Penticton Provides kicked off its fundraising event, which runs until mid-November and will collect items to support South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS) Keep The Cold Off.

Co-principals Sophie Tatham and Kayla Ward launched the initiative as a subcategory of Penticton Provides and are part of the school’s leadership team.

The initiative aims to support the South Okanagan community as winter approaches.

Ward said they hope to collect cold weather items for people who are not well adjusted to the change in temperature.

“We’re saying they’re being used sparingly so that when we collect them, we can then donate them to support these people in need,” she added.

This event is a subcategory of Penticton Provides, along with other major fundraisers such as 10,000 Tonight and Toys For Tots to Teens later in November and December.

“We first started it in the ninth grade, and we immediately saw the effects of it. Since then, we’ve expanded this initiative to make it much bigger and to be able to collect more items,” said Tatum.

“We are just grateful for everything that people donate. Honestly, any contributions are greatly appreciated and many people benefit from them.”

Ward added that their goal is to “help as many people as possible.”

Suggestions for donations of warm items include blankets, coats, gloves, scarves, warm hats, socks, boots and pants.

Donation bins can be found in the Pen High Counseling Office and in the drop-off area before and after school until Nov. 1 from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. or 3 to 3:30 p.m.

Items can also be dropped off at Sierra Flooring, the Penticton Library and the Community Center until November 8.
