Illegal immigrant with MS-13 killed couple: police

Authorities in Virginia have arrested an MS-13 gang member who entered the U.S. illegally on charges of double murder

The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of the suspect, 18-year-old Marlene Medrano-Ortiz, on Friday.

A teenager arrested in Alexandria early last week has been charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Authorities say Medrano-Ortiz killed Michal Conejero-Romera and Diego Alexander Woollett in Sterling, Virginia, on August 28. Both victims were 22 years old.

“They found two people with gunshot wounds, and both were taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead,” investigators said at the time.

In a recent press release Loudon County Sheriff Mike Chapman said the couple was “shot and killed after an apparent altercation” around 4:33 a.m. on Aug. 28.

A close friend of Conejero-Romera told WUSA that the two victims were dating.

“They seemed so happy,” Tinaia Henderson told the local paper. “Her family told me he treated her like a princess.”

In a statement Friday, Chapman said the investigation took a huge amount of manpower.

“This investigation involved multiple patrol units that searched more than 320 residences and 30 businesses, as well as more than a dozen detectives and members of our dive, K-9, drone and search and rescue units,” the official said.

“It also included the use of 39 search warrants and the work of our forensic analysts and digital forensics experts who reviewed more than 950 hours of video, multiple cell phones and laptops, as well as tower data, license plate readers and other analyses.”

Chapman also condemned MS-13 and criticized the “casual treatment” of criminals who are in the country illegally.

“I am officially taking a strong stand against the presence of MS-13 and other violent gangs in our country and local communities,” the sheriff said. “MS-13 is a gang from El Salvador that uses intimidation, crime and violence as tools of the trade, and there should be no safe place for them here.”

“I am also officially opposed to casual treatment of people illegal in this country who commit crimes against US citizens and others.”

“Today’s arrest is not an isolated incident,” Chapman added. “MS-13 operates throughout northern Virginia, and just this summer in Loudoun, one of the worst crimes in living memory occurred.”
