Jeevan Dean

A 24-year-old man from Wales was jailed for 19 years last week for throwing acid on a man he believed was beating his girlfriend, potentially blinding the victim.

Heddle Police in Wales announced Jeevan Dean’s sentencing at the weekend, saying his attack “caused his victim life-changing injuries”.

Dean was arrested in mid-August, three days after authorities said he “threw a corrosive substance” at another man, “potentially causing loss of vision.”

The Timesreported that Dean attacked Raven Riley after he believed he had “set his sights” on his girlfriend a few weeks ago. The outlet reported that Dean and Riley, 21, were at a house party together when Dean came out of the kitchen with a pan full of caustic soda and threw it in Riley’s face, yelling, “Stay away from my girlfriend!”

Riley had dated Dean’s girlfriend once before the incident times.

After the attack, Dean fled the scene while Riley screamed in pain and begged others for help, police said. The Times witnesses reportedly told Swansea Crown Court during Dean’s hearing that the leather seat Riley was sitting on began to melt and bubble from the chemicals Dean threw at the victim.

“Nobody ever wants to lose their sight because it’s such an important part of human existence,” Riley said in court, according to The Times. “He will never know how much pain he has caused me and my family. He ruined my life.”

Heddle police said Riley was treated at Glangville Hospital, where a staff member told officers what happened. Police arrested Dean three days later and charged him with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and throwing a corrosive substance with intent to maim, burn or disfigure.

According to police, Dean confessed to the crime.

“This was an appalling act of violence carried out with the intent to cause significant harm,” Dyfed Powys Police Chief Inspector Gary Williams said. “The victim suffered chemical burns that hospital staff had never seen and his vision will likely be affected for the rest of his life.”
