Mike Amesbury MP has been suspended from the Labor Party after CCTV footage emerged showing him punching a man to the ground.

He was also stripped of the Labor whip, meaning he will now sit in parliament as an independent.

Cheshire Police said the 55-year-old man was voluntarily interviewed in connection with the incident and has since been released pending further enquiries.

Amesbury has been contacted for comment.

A Labor Party spokesman said: “Mike Amesbury MP has been assisting Cheshire Police with their investigation following the incident on Friday night.

“As these investigations continue, the Labor Party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labor Party pending the investigation.”

It is not clear what happened in the buildup to the moments captured on film.

In the first clip, Amesbury can be heard yelling, “You’re never going to threaten a deputy again, are you?”

In a statement released before the Daily Mail footage emerged, Cheshire Police said: “At 02:48 BST on Saturday 26 October, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham.

“The caller reported that a man attacked him on the main street. Investigations are ongoing.”

Posting on his Facebook page on Saturday, the 55-year-old backbencher said: “I was involved in an incident last night after I felt threatened after a night out with friends.

“This morning I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what had happened.

“I will not be making any public comment but will of course co-operate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.”

Senior Minister Pat McFadden said the CCTV footage was “very clear” but he wanted to “allow the police to do their job and come to a conclusion before I say anything more”.

A Conservative Party spokesman said Amesbury “has questions about his actions”, adding that it was “right they are being thoroughly investigated”.

A spokesman for Reform UK, whose candidate came second to Amesbury in July’s general election, called for him to resign.

In a post on Xshe said: “The police are investigating and I’m sure all the facts will emerge soon.

“I have worked with One Punch UK for many years to raise awareness of the dangers that one punch can cause.

“Such violence – no matter what the background of the quarrel – is never and should never be justified.”

Amesbury was the Labor MP for Cheshire from 2017 and was a shadow minister from 2018 to 2024.

In the July general election, he won his constituency with a majority of 14,696 votes.

In July 2023, the 56-year-old was found guilty of stalking and harassing Amesbury in his county and the city.
