One is accused of committing a crime after an accident in which an Odessa resident was seriously injured

Odesa, TX (KMID/KPEJ). A Midland man was arrested early Sunday morning after investigators say he allegedly drove drunk and caused a crash that seriously injured an Odessa man. Jose Contreras was charged with aggravated assault with a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and collision with serious bodily injury, both third-degree felonies.

According to jail records, Contreras was booked into the Ector County Law Enforcement Center around 4:45 a.m. on Oct. 27, just hours after a crash in the 3700 block of N Everglade that seriously injured Alex Bingham.

Those close to Bingham said he was sleeping early Sunday morning and woke up to a loud noise he heard outside his home; when he went outside to see what was happening, family members said a car came around the corner, jumped the curb and hit Bingham. Those close to Bingham said the crash caused multiple broken bones, including a broken back and hip, internal bleeding and a severe brain injury. Bingham is put into a medically induced coma and has a long road ahead of him as he tries to recover.

Witnesses said the driver of the car was leaving a party at a nearby house when he crashed into Bingham. He reportedly abandoned his vehicle nearby and fled the scene. Contreras was arrested a short time later and remained in custody on $30,000 bail as of Monday morning.

We have reached out to the Odessa Police Department for additional information regarding this incident and will update as more information becomes available.
