A tragic fire in a multi-storey residential building in Ahmedabad’s Bhopal area left a 65-year-old woman dead and 22 others hospitalized on Friday evening. The fire broke out around 10.40pm on the 8th floor of the 21-storey Iskon Platina building and quickly spread to the 21st floor, officials said.

According to Bhopal police, the fire caused severe damage and prompted the evacuation of more than 200 residents of the building. Firefighters went to the scene, more than a dozen fire engines worked tirelessly to contain the fire. Firefighting continued until 3:40 a.m. Saturday.

The injured, including several residents who suffered burns and smoke inhalation, were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, one elderly woman, identified as Milaben Shah, succumbed to her injuries.

Possible cause of fire

According to preliminary data, the cause of the fire could be a short circuit in the power line on the 8th floor, although the authorities are still determining the exact cause. Firefighters confirmed that the fire spread quickly due to the construction of a high-rise building, which created significant problems for firefighters.

Evacuation, emergency response

The fire prompted a rapid evacuation and residents, some of whom were trapped on upper floors, were rescued and brought to safety by firefighters and local authorities. Several residents were treated for minor injuries at the scene and then transported to the hospital for further treatment.

The victims, including adults and children, mostly suffered from smoke inhalation and burns.

Local authorities and fire officials assured residents that they are thoroughly investigating the incident to prevent similar incidents in the future.
