MSNBC faces backlash for using Nazi rally clips during coverage of Madison Square Garden

A storm of conservatives erupted on social networks MSNBC for splicing clips of a 1939 Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden while covering former President Donald Trumpevent in New York over the weekend.

The left network equated Trump Sunday evening rally with the German-American Bund Madison Square Garden event, which took place on the eve of World War II and gathered in support of the Nazi movement.

“But the jamboree that’s going on right now, you’re seeing it over there on your screen, that place is especially horrible because in 1939, over 20,000 supporters of another fascist leader, Adolf Hitler, gathered in the Garden for a so-called pro-American rally.” warned the host of MSNBC when footage of participants in the 1939 rally appeared online.

2024 ELECTION UPDATE: THE LATEST ON THE TRUMP-HARRIS PRESIDENTIAL RACE

Trump’s campaign event at Madison Square Garden was held just over a week before Election Day. The packed arena cheered as one rally speaker blasted the Harris campaign’s message, promoting “joy» in New York. “Dream big again” slogans blared on giant screens as Trump called on voters in his hometown.

Conservatives were quick to defend the GOP leader’s rally against MSNBC’s correction of the event, saying the network had reached a “new low” in its attempt to “demonize millions of Americans.”

The network’s decision to merge the footage comes after days of accusations that Trump is a “fascist” and some outspoken comparisons of the former president to Hitler. Vice President Kamala Harris accused Trump of fascism, and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), suggested there was a “direct parallel” between the 1939 rally and Trump’s Sunday night event. Other leading Democrats, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, argued that Trump was trying to “to reproduce“Nazi rally.

Backlash to MSNBC’s coverage Sunday night was immediate, as Republicans pointed to a diverse range of attendees, including a Holocaust survivor.

“Hey @MSNBC, this is what you’ve been doing on national TV, and it’s Jerry Wartsky, a Holocaust survivor, at today’s rally. True colors. You must apologize to this man. Not to mention the rest of the Jews at the Madison rally. Whose antisemitism?” one user interrogated.

Jerry Wartsky, who was held in Auschwitz and survived one of the Nazi death marches, sharply criticized Harris for painting Trump as a fascist.

“I know more about Hitler than Kamala will ever know in a thousand lifetimes. For her to accuse President Trump of being like Hitler is the worst thing I’ve ever heard in my 75 years of living in the United States,” he said in a recent campaign video for Trump.

“She owes my parents and everyone else who was killed by Hitler an apology for repeating this lie,” he continued.

Madison Square Garden has been a popular venue for American politicians for nearly a century. Former Presidents Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt campaigned on the grounds, and Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe sang “Happy Birthday” to former President John F. Kennedy when he hosted the event at Madison Square Garden in 1962. The New York hall has also been the site of several national conventions of the Democratic and Republican parties.
