Suspect killed in shootout with police after shooting police sergeant in Fresno, California

FRESNO, Calif. — A man who shot and killed a police sergeant in what officials are calling an ambush attack was killed by responding officers over the weekend in Fresno, Calif., authorities said.

A sergeant was sitting in his parked car working on a homicide case nearby when a car pulled up around 5:30 p.m. Saturday and the driver opened fire, Fresno Interim Police Chief Mindy Casto said. She said the officer was ambushed.

Despite being wounded, the sergeant was able to return fire when officers responded and joined the firefight, Casto said. The man was shot by police and pronounced dead at a hospital, the interim chief said. He was not immediately identified.

The sergeant, a 21-year veteran of the department, was in stable condition after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the lower body, the Fresno Bee reported Monday.

Detectives were investigating whether a suspect was involved in a homicide case in which a man was found dead in a home in southeast Fresno.
