A ‘deliberately set’ utility room fire has canceled intramural classes at a Utah elementary school

MIDVALE, UT (ABC4) — A large utility box, authorities say, was intentionally set on fire nearby Midvalley Primary School forced the school to cancel the face-to-face meeting.

The fire reportedly broke out shortly before 3 a.m. Investigators with the Unified Police Department told ABC4.com that surveillance footage in the area shows an elderly man with a gray beard setting a utility box on fire before leaving the scene.

Investigators do not believe that there is any threat to the school at this time. However, the Canyons School District has decided to hold classes remotely and online while investigators and utility workers assess the damage to the utility box.

The investigation into the alleged arson is still ongoing, according to the Joint Police Department. Investigators said the suspect was driving a newer model Hyundai Sante Fe and may have out-of-state license plates.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to call the Unified Police Department at 385-468-9350.
