Makoto Shinkai ‘extremely jealous’ of ‘A Silent Voice’ director after first watching his musical anime

In the anime industry, few anime films have managed to leave an indelible mark on the hearts of their viewers like Naoko Yamada’s A quiet voice. Because the film has such an authentic storyline, Yamada-san has received praise from countless people around the world, and it looks like one of her projects has a certain fan following. Makoto Shinkai, writer Your Name, came forward to express his deep admiration for one of her works.

The list was supplemented by another popular title, where the director once again came up with a new film that surprised her fans. Kimi no Iro, or Colors insidecentered around three high school students who decided to form a band together.

The main character, Totsuko Higurashi, can see the colors of emotions around the people around her. As such, she kept reading situations and kept smoothing things over to keep them calm.

During an exclusive interview with Eigaboth directors, Makoto Shinkai and Naoko Yamada, sat down to discuss the newly released title. Director Fr Your Name explained how he came across her 2011 film, which gave him all kinds of emotions. He said:

I was first introduced to Yamada’s work through K-On! It was a huge social hit, but the novelty, fun, and cuteness of the animation itself struck me so much at the time that I thought, “I hope this is made by someone far away from me, someone with a different career. or generation.

He went on to explain how he watched the movie with jealousy because of how talented Yamada-san was. He added,

If it had been done by someone with completely different qualities than myself, I could have tolerated it, but my first impression was that I would be extremely jealous of the talent itself.

however, K-On! this is not the only film that has caught the attention of the veteran director. Her latest film, Colors inside also evoked the same musical feeling by doing Suzume the director praises the film.

In the same interview, the 51-year-old director explained why the 2024 film evoked the same emotions and musical theme as the 2011 title. The main reason for this belief is that the film also follows a plot where three schoolchildren form a group, each with a distinct personality.

He said:

There were many moments I loved while watching The Colors Within, but my favorite was the scene before the performance at the school festival.

However, what completely surprised him was how each character stood behind each other, showing an example from the movie. He said:

Before the performance, Kimi-chan is nervous, wondering if it’s okay to perform (live). Totsuko tells her, “What are you talking about? You look so motivated.” When Kimi-chan (hears it and) gets up, her fashion is definitely rock. I thought it was a great way to handle comic characters.
