The President of Georgia called for protests after the results of the parliamentary elections

Georgia’s president called for protests after election officials said the pro-Russian ruling party had won a majority in Saturday’s parliamentary election. She called on opposition supporters to rally on Monday in the capital, Tbilisi.

Salome Zurabishvili told reporters on Sunday that she cannot accept the election results. The pro-Western president said that this would be the same as “recognizing Russia’s entry” into her country. Georgia is a former Soviet republic.

Pro-Western opposition parties rejected the results, saying the election was rigged. They want Georgia to become a member of the European Union.

The Central Election Commission announced that the ruling Georgian Dream party won 54% of the vote. It is believed that the party takes a conciliatory position towards Moscow, which leads to the deterioration of relations with Western countries.

The head of the monitoring delegation of the European Parliament held a press conference after the elections on Sunday. According to him, his teams witnessed intimidation of voters and physical attacks on observers.

The EU issued a statement calling on the election commission and other relevant bodies to investigate election violations.
