Police are looking for a driver involved in an accident that killed a passenger

WOODBRIDGE. Police are looking for the driver of a car that was involved in an accident on Friday that killed a passenger, authorities said.

It is assumed that the driver fled the scene.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the single-car crash that killed Mario Ortiz Bonilla, 47, of North Plainfield, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Woodbridge Police Department Director Robert Hubner said.

As reported by the prosecutor’s office, on Friday, at 9:05 a.m., the police arrived at the section of Route 9 and Zelena Street in the village following a report of an accident. At the scene, law enforcement officers found a 2017 Kia Sportage in which only the front passenger of Bonilla was sitting.

Bonilla died from his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

An investigation led by Detective Jeffrey Horvath of the Woodbridge Police Department and Detective Matthew Colonna of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the driver of the Kia Sportage fled the scene.
