A new video shows a Labor MP repeatedly hitting a man

New video has emerged showing Labor MP Mike Amesbury punching a man and then punching him repeatedly after he fell to the floor.

Footage released by Mail Online shows the MP standing in front of another man before punching him, then continuing to punch him as the man lies on the floor as others nearby shout: “Stop it”.

It comes after a video went viral on the internet on Saturday, which appears to show him berating a man lying on the road before a passerby pushes him away.

Cheshire Police confirmed officers were called to an attack in Frodsham at 2.48am and “inquiries are ongoing”.

Mr Amesbury said he would “co-operate with any enquiries” after the first footage went viral.

Asked whether the Labor Party was investigating, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson told Sky News Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips: “Mike Amesbury, the MP in question, has gone to the police.

“He is cooperating with any investigation they want to pursue. That’s the job of the police, and we want to let them do that job.”

In a video posted on social media on Saturday, the MP for Runcorn and Helsby pointed a finger at a man lying on the ground and said: “You’re never going to threaten me again, are you?” while someone off-camera yells at him.

On Saturday, Mr Amesbury, 55, said: “I was involved in an incident last night after I felt threatened in the street after a night out with friends.

“This morning I myself contacted Cheshire Police to report what had happened during the incident.

“I will not be making any further public comment but will of course co-operate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby and I am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

Earlier on Friday, Mr Amesbury posted on social media about attending a meeting with local residents on police protection and public safety.

Last July, the 56-year-old was found guilty of stalking the MP at his constituency office in Frodsham, where prosecutors said he was seen peering through the glass and asking security guards about their level of security.

A Labor spokesman said the party was aware of the incident on Saturday and “we understand that (Mr Amesbury) has contacted Cheshire Police himself to report what happened this morning and that he will co-operate with any enquiries, which they have.”

Cheshire Police said: “At 2.48am on October 26, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham.

“The caller reported that a man attacked him on the main street. Investigations are ongoing.”
