The Nigerian Police condemns the unauthorized use of the VeryDarkMan uniform

Abuja, Nigeria. The Nigerian Police has issued a statement condemning the unauthorized use of its official uniform by social media personality Martins Otse known as VeryDarkMan. This happened after the release of a video in which Otse is depicted in police uniform and calls himself CSP VeryDarkMan, proclaiming himself to be Nigeria’s “number one online cop”.

In a controversial video, the online activist expresses his commitment to cleaning up the social media landscape, especially against online sellers he sees as oppressors. He also claimed that, unlike traditional police procedures, he would publicly shame offenders based on available evidence.

In response to the incident, the Nigerian police distanced itself from Otse’s image and announced an investigation to trace the origin of the police uniform and determine the nature of Otse’s actions. The force acknowledged the creativity of Nigerian youths in creating content, but stressed the importance of following police dress code.

The police department said: “The unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia or related items is a criminal offense under Article 251 of the Penal Code Act and Article 133 of the Penal Code Act, which carries severe penalties.” They reiterated that such misuse compromises the values and integrity of the police and will not be tolerated.

Members of the public were reminded of the legal consequences associated with unauthorized use of police uniforms, stressing that while they appreciate creative expression, adherence to protocol is paramount.
