Middle East latest: Iran’s supreme leader responds to Israeli strikes; dozens injured after a truck hit a bus stop World news

Welcome to our live coverage of events in the Middle East.

The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry says at least 22 people were killed in Israeli strikes on the northern city of Beit Lahiya last night – more on that later.

We’ll also bring you the latest on the fallout from Israel’s strikes on military targets in Iran, as the focus shifts to how Tehran will respond – if at all.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested that the response not be considered in a post on social media.

He said: “We fully reserve the right to respond appropriately to this aggression, which cannot be separated from Israel’s genocide in Gaza and the bloodshed in Lebanon.”

The Israeli military said its strikes were in response to “months of continuous attacks by the regime in Iran against the State of Israel.”

According to a Reuters report, satellite images showed that the Israeli attack targeted buildings used to mix fuel for ballistic missiles in Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted they had chosen targets in Iran based on their own interests and not according to “American dictates”, while Joe Biden expressed hope that Israel’s strikes would end a cycle of escalation between the two sides.
