Jealous man jailed in Singapore for ‘brutal’ attack on ex after fan’s flowers spark anger

SINGAPORE, November 20. A man from Singapore has been sentenced to one week in jail for attacking his ex-girlfriend at her home out of jealousy.

According to a report by CNA, 26-year-old Zachary Chung Wei Ik pleaded guilty to one count of wounding with intent and another count of disorderly conduct pending sentencing.

The attack took place on September 12, 2023, after Chang, who was in a relationship with the victim, a 40-year-old South Korean nightclub worker, from March 2022 to May 2023, became enraged after seeing her receiving flowers from another man at a nightclub.

In Singapore, visitors usually buy flower garlands for female hostesses and entertainers.

Chung followed the victim home and punched and kicked her in the face and head, demanding she reveal the identity of the other man. He also destroyed some of her belongings.

The victim suffered bruising, swelling and facial injuries, which led to hospitalization and further leave.

The prosecution called the attack “brutal” and said Chang paid about S$1,600 (RM5,350) for the victim’s medical expenses, totaling more than S$2,400, but only after she claimed financial hardship.

Lawyer James Ow Yong argued that Chang acted on impulse, citing the couple’s mutual accusations of infidelity. “It was more madness than a targeted attack,” he said.

In sentencing, District Judge James Elisha Lee emphasized the unprovoked nature of the attack and the severity of the victim’s injuries.

Although the case was less severe than the previous one, the judge found imprisonment appropriate.

Chung will begin serving his sentence on December 13.
