Indianapolis man arrested in connection with murder after being released from jail 2 days ago: report

Police detained a man from Indianapolis for murder after they say he intentionally drove up and killed another man outside a bar just two days after being released from prison.

On Thursday, detectives with the Indianapolis Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) announced the arrest of 33-year-old Felipe Maguellal.

VCU detectives located and arrested Magwellal, who is suspected of being involved in the Oct. 19 slaying of Perry Banks, police said.

Just after midnight on October 19, FOX 59 reports that several witnesses said Banks helped break up an argument between people he didn’t know at the Checkered Flag Tavern on West Morris Street.

Police said 33-year-old Felipe Maguellal got into his SUV and deliberately drove into the crowd, running over and killing Banks, who was simply trying to quell the riot.

Police told FOX 59 that Maguellal allegedly got into his SUV and intentionally drove into a crowd of people, hit and run Banks, who reportedly tried to de-escalate the situation.

“I hope that any criminal, anyone that is thinking about committing a crime, will think twice because IMPD will not stop and we will find you,” IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson told FOX 59.

Despite the arrest, some police chiefs say the case against Magwellyal shows flaws in the criminal justice system.

Felipe Maguellal is being held without bail pending formal murder charges.

A week before the killing, police say surveillance footage shows the same suspect, believed to be Magwellal, threatening and then shooting the driver of a car after a fight at a club on Indy’s south side.

FOX 59 reported that the victim told police he also tried to play peacemaker by breaking up a fight between strangers outside the club.

The victim then claimed Maguellal grabbed a gun and chased him through the parking lot before shooting him in the elbow. According to the police, the victim drove himself to the hospital and survived.

Police quickly arrested Maguellal for battery and criminal negligence in that shooting, and court records obtained by FOX 59 show a Marion County judge initially set the suspect’s bond at $100,000.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the death of a city resident.

Court documents showed that the bond amount came from the fact that Mageullal also had pending criminal case intimidation, trespassing and drug charges in Johnson County in September.

However, for unknown reasons, Maguellal’s bail was immediately reduced to $15,000 and he was released from jail just two days before Bank’s murder.

“It’s a system that’s a revolving door that gives anyone who comes in with a violent charge a get-out-of-jail-free card, and the consequences are deadly.” Indy Fraternal Order of Police President Rick Snyder told FOX 59.

According to an affidavit related to the murder case, Magwellal denied any involvement in the murder.

Maguellal is currently being held without bail pending formal murder charges.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Indianapolis Police Department for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
