Last hours to apply for CashApp Direct Payment

If you have been an active participant in the economy since 2018, you have not been living under a rock, but keep cash just over the years, you’ve probably used Cashapp as a form of payment and money transfer. Because regular data leaks were proven in court, the company agreed to a $15 million settlement. Good news? You still have a week to join the claim and get compensation for the personal data leak.

In 2022, Block Inc. (the company that owns Cash App and Cash App Investing) was accused of improperly protecting user data. This happened after a former employee accessed account information without permission. Block later told the US Securities and Exchange Commission that it had contacted approximately 8.2 million current and former users to inform them of the incident.

Personal data of Cashapp users has been stolen more than once

The first data breach occurred in December 2021, caused by a former Cash App employee. After leaving the company, they downloaded customer reports without permission. These reports contained sensitive personal information from 8.2 million users. Given that Cash App had 57 million users in 2024, this breach affected approximately 14% of customers.

The story did not end there. Not long after the first breach, another security issue arose. This time, unauthorized persons penetrated user accounts and carried out fraudulent transactions. These two incidents led to a class action lawsuit. After months of legal wrangling, Cash App agreed to pay $15 million in compensation to affected customers.

While Cash App and its parent company Block (formerly known as Square), say they did nothing wrong, but the deal underscores just how serious cybersecurity problems have become. Personal data protection is a major concern for millions of people right now, and this incident shows that even well-known and trusted platforms can be at risk of being hacked.
