24 killed, 5 injured after bus crash and trailer collide in Mexico

Mexican authorities said on Saturday that a bus overturned in central Mexico after colliding with a trailer that had detached from a truck carrying corn, killing 24 people and injuring five others.

The accident happened at midnight on Friday when the bus was leaving Tepic in the western Mexican state of Nayarit and headed for Ciudad Juarez in northern Mexico. The injured are being treated at a hospital in Zacatecas.

Juan Manriquez Moreno, National Guard coordinator in Zacatecas, said in a video statement posted on social media that the truck’s trailer detached on the highway. The passenger bus collided with a trailer and overturned on its right side.

Rodrigo Reyes Mugerza, secretary general of the government of Zacatecas, also shared a statement from the scene of the crash. “We express our solidarity and condolences to all the families and people who lost loved ones in this unfortunate accident,” he said.

He added that the highway where the accident happened was closed as officials secured the area. Authorities said they would soon release the names of the injured so their families could find them.
