Students use art to help UPAWS

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Students at Sandy Knoll Elementary School are hoping to help UPAWS pets find their forever homes.

Those who enter the art room may notice portraits of dogs, cats and bunnies. The portraits were drawn by fourth and fifth grade students, showing the animals that can be found at UPAWS.

Sandy Knoll art teacher Jacqueline Wagner says when a pet is adopted, the portrait comes home with them. She says it’s a chance to teach her students about empathy.

“I think children are naturally empathetic,” Wagner said. “They got really excited about the project and wanted to take all the animals, naturally.”
