JACKSON, Tennessee. — Social media has benefits for teenagers, such as helping them learn new skills or make new friends — but it can also be difficult to navigate within a family.

Instagram recently announced that they are changing the way teenagers use the app with a new one Accounts of teenagers.

Teen accounts have built-in protections that limit who teens can contact and the content they see.

Teens under 16 need parental permission to change any of these protections.

“Instagram, teen accounts and parental controls actually make it easier by making things like, parents can’t read those individual messages, so they can see age-appropriate topics that their teens are looking at as teenagers. accounts and get more information if they want it,” said Dr. Whitney Casares. “It makes it so that teenagers don’t have to intrude on their privacy, but parents can still have some level of supervision and control.”

According to Dr. Casares, Instagram has already automatically placed millions of teens on teen accounts.
