Messi’s first MLS playoff win

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. Lionel Messi failed to score in the first MLS playoff game of his storied career, but the greatest player of all time still found a way to lead his club to victory.

Messi assisted Jordi Albi in the 60th minute, Luis Suarez scored in the second minute and Inter Miami beat Atlanta United 2-1 on Friday night to begin their best-of-three run from the first round. MLS Cup Playoffs.

Game 2 is Nov. 2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Game 3, if necessary, will return to Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium on Nov. 9.

“We have taken an important step. It was the only team in our region that we could not beat. The fact that he arrived at this time is very good,” Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said of the win over Atlanta, one of four clubs to beat Miami this season.

At least 150,000 viewers simultaneously watched the “Messi cam,” Messi’s live stream exclusively on the MLS and Inter Miami TikTok accounts. The much-anticipated match was also broadcast worldwide for free on Apple TV.

Messi entered the match having scored two hat tricks in the last 10 days – three goals for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier and three goals in 11 minutes for Inter Miami to set an MLS scoring record. But he couldn’t continue his scoring magic from arguably the healthiest stretch of his career since joining Inter Miami in the first leg of the MLS playoffs.

Messi had nine shots in the match, including four on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net – in part due to his errors and excellent defending by Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Messi shot through the legs of Guzan in the last minute of the match, his first shot on target was saved by Guzan in the 26th minute, and in the 72nd minute he saw a free-kick deflected by Guzan’s left knee.

Messi also missed in the right-hand space in the 29th minute, missed a free-kick in the 52nd minute, shot over the bar in the 66th minute and missed other late chances in the final 30 minutes.

“If it wasn’t for Brad, the game probably ended up with a couple more goals,” Martino said of the Atlanta goaltender.

Messi relied on two of his former Barcelona team-mates in Suarez and Alba to secure Inter Miami’s first playoff victory in the franchise’s four-year history.

Suarez’s goal came off an assist from Diego Gomez after Alba is a finalist for MLS Defender of the Year.

Alba’s goal, a laser shot from Messi’s pass, ended the tie after Atlanta’s Saba Lobzhanidze scored in the 39th minute. It was the surge Inter Miami, which is behind its two MVP finalists in Messi and Suarez, needed to win.

“The best left-back in the world,” Suarez said of Alba. “Wherever he is, he will always be the best at his position.”

Inter Miami is chasing its third title since Messi joined the club in July 2023. Messi is also vying for his 47th title for club and country.

Messi and Inter Miami won the 2023 League Cup and the MLS Supporters’ Shield title, the league’s best finish this season. The club also set an MLS record with 74 points during the regular season.

“Well, I think we’re one of the favorites (to win the MLS Cup),” Messi said in an interview with Apple TV and 433 Football, a soccer content company, before the match.

“I think we are a team that has grown and learned to compete and will compete with anyone. But I think there are also tough teams who will be very tough opponents and who won’t make it easy. But I think other teams respect us, as we respect them.”

The match was not without disappointment for Inter Miami: Jan Frei, a 22-year-old defender who has suffered three ACL injuries in his career, left the game in the 90th minute with an apparent right leg injury.

“We’re leaving not so much with a sense of satisfaction – more because of Ian, because we’re upset and we know the injury he suffered,” Martino said of Frei, without elaborating on the nature of his injury.

Messi was denied from point-blank range thanks to a ridiculous save by Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Messi’s shot was blocked by my Guzan’s left knee in the series.

Lionel Messi follows him, but has yet to find the goal. After some back-and-forth with Luis Suarez, Messi fired a close-range shot that flew over the net.

Inter Miami’s MLS Defender of the Year candidate Jordi Alba struck with his left boot in the 60th minute to give Inter Miami a 2-1 lead again. Alba scored off Messi’s assist and the two hugged in celebration after the goal.

Lionel Messi’s penalty in the 52nd minute went from the right edge of the goal. After two hat-tricks in the last 10 days, Messi looks a bit rusty in this play-off match.

Atlanta got the lead from their top scorer when Saba Lobzhanidze fired a left-footed shot past Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender in the 39th minute. We’re tied at Chase Stadium.

almost. Messi shot towards goal, but it ricocheted off the right post almost for the score, which made him despair.

In the 26th minute, Lionel Messi broke into the net with a left shot by Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Inter Miami is already leading thanks to Luis Suarez’s goal in the 2nd minute of the match. The goal came after about the first 1:40 of game time from the MLS MVP candidate. Suarez even did a griddy dance to celebrate the goal, presumably in the direction of his young son in the stands. Suarez has scored 20 goals for Inter Miami in MLS play this season, tying him with Messi for the team lead.

Messi was also named one of five MLS MVP finalists on Thursday, and is considered the favorite to win the award.

Messi’s marketing machine is also in full swing Messi’s captain’s debutsuperhero toy with Hard Rock International, among other projects the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has been pursuing off the field.
