The public is invited to share their thoughts on plans to redevelop downtown Mastic Beach

Brookhaven Town has announced a public meeting Thursday night to discuss plans for the long-awaited redevelopment of downtown Mastic Beach.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at 6:30 pm at William Floyd High School, 240 Mastic Beach Rd. in Mastic Beach.

Master developer Beechwood Organization of Jericho will submit a proposed land use plan for the redevelopment zone, which includes a half-mile stretch of Neighborhood Road, the township’s business district, city officials said in a news release Friday.

Brookhaven and Beachwood officials said plan includes a mixture of townhouses, condominiums, shops and parking areas.

The area currently has small shops, restaurants and bars, as well as recently constructed buildings, including an ambulance company and a branch of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Public Library.

The reconstruction of the city center received widespread support from residents, as well as business and public leaders.

Officials expect the redevelopment to get a boost from Suffolk County construction River Forge watershed areawhich includes sewer connections important for adding new homes and restaurants.

The reconstruction plan includes as many as 140 real estate objects, most of which are aging businesses and vacant lots, the city authorities said.

Meeting attendees will be invited to participate in small group discussions with representatives from Beachwood and Brookhaven to discuss details of the plan and provide feedback.

In a statement, Supervisor Dan Panico, a Mastic Beach native, said he hoped the plan would “write a new positive chapter in the history of Mastic Beach.”

Mastic Beach was an incorporated village about seven years ago disbandment in 2017 after years of budget crisis and political struggle.

In 2018, the city government launched a reconstruction plan aimed at rebuilding the city center and attracting new homeowners. Mastic Beach has a population of 14,199, according to the latest available 2020 census data.

Beechwood was selected in 2021 for the project master developer.
