The driver of the SUV, Omkar More (26) of Sanpada, fled the scene, Nerul police sources said, adding that they found a case of beer bottles in the damaged SUV, abandoned at the spot, which had broken due to the accident.
The police, at first glance, suspect that Mor was intoxicated at the time of the accident. He was detained for three hours and his medical examination at the NMMC hospital in Vashi confirmed that he had consumed alcohol, says Senior Inspector Brahmanand Naikwadi of the Nerul police station.

The driver of the SUV was sent to the police until tomorrow

The fatal accident took place near the Sarsole Jetty traffic light around 3:15 am on Thursday when the family was returning home from Belapur.
Inspector Naikwadi said: “When the SUV’s airbags deployed, its driver, More, escaped with minor injuries. The driver of the car, Pednekar, was declared dead on arrival at NMMC Hospital, Nerul. Sneha was admitted to Dr DY Patil Hospital, Nerul and is out of danger, said the doctors treating her. Ananya is in a critical condition due to severe injuries and is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit at Apollo Hospital, Belapur.”
The inspector said an FIR has been registered against the driver of the SUV, More, who was arrested after he was booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act for reckless and negligent driving causing death. He was later produced before a local court, which remanded him in police custody till November 9, police said.
“We have also enforced Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for the criminal offense of driving under the influence of alcohol,” Naikwadi said.
A vigilant citizen, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “In Belapur along Palm Beach Road, there are several pubs and discotheques that open till early morning. Young people enjoy alcoholic drinks and drive cars after drinking alcohol. Pub management should make sure they don’t get behind the wheel after drinking. They should either take a taxi to get home or their personal car should be driven by someone who has not been drinking.”
