The 38th Student Hunger Drive will hold a final rally today

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – The 38th student hunger strike ended with a rally Thursday night.

Sixteen high schools in the Quad Cities region participated in the food drive and fundraiser that began in September.

Students from competing schools planned, executed and set goals to be named the top fundraiser in their division.

Lexi Thomsen, a senior at Orion High School, said her school received many donations from the community, including 1,000 boxes of cereal.

“It made me really happy that, like the whole community, they think of us and think that we are here to donate and help everyone in need.” said Thomsen.

During the trip, students learn about volunteering and organizing by working with elementary and middle schools.

Harper Miller, a sophomore at Assumption High School, said she was overwhelmed by the overwhelming response from the community and students.

“The support that people gave and the students were just motivated to win and succeed and they brought so much food,” Miller said. “They went to the store and bought food and all our catering schools brought a lot of food as well.”

The rally will take place from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. outside the River Bend Food Bank. Before the start of the rally, students make donations to the food bank.

in 2023 year The Student Hunger Drive provided 818,468 meals, surpassing the 2022 record of 817,038 meals.
