Connecticut may be small, but it’s teeming natural beauty just waiting to be explored. If you’re looking for a scenic hike with breathtaking views and a touch of history, the Putnam River Trail should be your next adventure. This urban trail perfectly combines nature and small-town charm, making it perfect for a quick day trip or weekend getaway.

The Putnam River Trail meanders along the east bank of the Queenbaug River, offering stunning views of the water, Cargill Falls, and the surrounding landscape. This three-mile mostly paved trail is a favorite for hikers, cyclists and families. Don’t let the “easy” rating fool you; there’s plenty to see and do along the way.

One of the highlights? Magical bridges crossing the river. Each of the three bridges has its own unique character and offers picturesque views. Don’t miss the 200-foot pedestrian bridge built on the foundation of an old railroad trestle. Just imagine the history these stones witnessed!

While walking along the trail, be sure to check out the historical exhibits scattered along the route. They offer a fascinating look at Putnam’s past, from the days of the railway and textile mills to the people who shaped its identity. There’s even an exhibit on the Great Flood of 1955—a reminder of the power of nature and community resilience.

Speaking of exciting things to discover, the scenery along the Putnam River route is as diverse as its history. You’ll wander through quiet forests, stroll past inviting parks, catch a glimpse of Putnam’s revived mills, and even come across artistic sculptures like Locked in Love. And for those who love everything vintage, antiques shopping district sits right next to the trail.

The Putnam River Trail is always open and ready for you. The main season to visit is March to November, but I’m curious to see what it’s like in winter; maybe a snow hike in my future? There is plenty of parking along Kennedy Drive and you will find portadas near some of the parking lots. After your hike, explore the town of Putnam and discover the Putnam Public Library, catch a show at the Bradley Playhouse, or browse for unique finds at Antique market.
