Two are in custody after an alleged homicide by Grand Forks police

Oct. 25 – GRAND FORKS – Two people are in custody after a death in Grand Forks that police say may have been a homicide.

The 49-year-old man, who police say died under suspicious circumstances, has been identified by the public as Anthony James Kiel.

On Friday afternoon, police told the media that two “persons of interest” were in custody.

“At this time, the names of no individuals are being released due to the ongoing nature of the investigation,” the message reads. “No formal charges have been filed against any individual at this time.”

After a 911 call that came in shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, police responded to the 100 block of Cherry Street and found Kiel unresponsive at the residence, according to a release issued by the Grand Forks Police Department just after 2 a.m. the prison

The release said Kiel suffered “suspicious injuries.” Lifesaving efforts were made but he was pronounced dead at Altru Hospital.

According to the message, “a person of interest has been identified. Presumably, this person and the victim were acquainted.”

In a phone call with the Herald on Friday morning, Lt. Andrew Stein confirmed that no person of interest has been arrested.

An updated release identifying Kiel said the incident does not appear to be random and GFPD does not believe there is any danger to the general public.

“The investigation is still in the early stages and information is being actively pursued,” the statement said.
