A dead, cut-up dolphin has been found on a Jersey Shore beach, authorities said

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in trying to determine who stabbed a dolphin found on a beach in Allenhurst last week.

The common dolphin’s organs, except for the heart and lungs, were removed and all of its flesh was cut with a sharp instrument, the Marine Mammal Center reported.

Only the head, dorsal fin and flukes remained when stranding center workers arrived at Allen Avenue Beach on Wednesday.

The night before, a witness reported a live common dolphin struggling in the surf one block away. The dolphin crossed the sandbar and swam back into the ocean. Officials are not sure if it was the same dolphin that was found dead.

The stranding center staff brought the remains of the dolphins to their Brigantine headquarters to be photographed and documented. The dolphin’s carcass was buried on the seashore.

Law enforcement agencies of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Administration are investigating.
