New intelligence features may arrive sooner than expected, here’s what we know

Apple may be preparing to unveil its latest wave of AI-powered features earlier than expected. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the iOS 18.2 update, equipped with enhanced Apple Intelligence capabilities, could launch as early as the first week of December, rather than later this month. Notably, Apple is also rumored to be exploring the possibility of integrating Google’s AI Gemini, similar to how ChatGPT runs on the OpenAI platform.

The tech giant has already hinted that the December update will introduce more sophisticated AI-based tools. Highlights include expected updates to Siri, as well as Apple’s Intelligence Writing Tools, which potentially have ChatGPT integration. In addition, the iPhone 16 series is expected to showcase new Visual Intelligence capabilities and debut an innovative app called Image Playground for creative image creation.

Apple iOS 18.2 coming in December? Here’s what you can expect

• ChatGPT integration: Apple confirmed that system-wide writing tools and Siri virtual assistant will gain access to ChatGPT in December. Once deployed, users can request help from the OpenAI chatbot directly through these features. In addition, Writing Tools and Siri will receive enhanced capabilities for understanding images and documents.
• Image generation tools: In the iOS 18.2 developer beta, Apple introduced new image generation tools, such as Image Playground for creating images from text prompts and Genmoji for designing your own emoji. These tools are expected to become available to users with the iOS 18.2 update in December.
• Visual Intelligence: In December, Apple is set to debut Visual Intelligence for the iPhone 16 series. This feature will include a new camera control button that will allow users to use Apple Intelligence to explore objects and places around them. For example, users can gather information about nearby restaurants or instantly translate text through a camera-like interface.
• Recording tools: The December update will improve Apple Intelligence’s recording tools, making them even more versatile. In addition to ChatGPT integration, users will be able to refine their text by making adjustments, such as turning a dinner invitation into a poetic message.

Google Gemini integration coming next year?

Bloomberg reports that Apple is likely to incorporate Google’s Gemini AI into its iPhone operating system in a model similar to ChatGPT. However, this integration is expected to launch next year as Apple may grant exclusive access to OpenAI for a limited period.

Earlier this year, sources suggested that Apple and Google were close to a deal to bring Gemini to iOS, macOS and iPadOS, with Apple also exploring alternatives such as Amazon-backed Anthropic.

In addition, iPhone users can look forward to new features that enhance Siri’s understanding of personal context, allowing the virtual assistant to provide more personalized responses and display enhanced awareness on the screen.
