Was Thomas Masia shot on Long Island? An investigation has been launched into the case – NBC New York

The authorities started an internal investigation in the case of a A New York state police officer who said he was shot by a suspect at Long Island South State Park last week, authorities said Monday.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the internal investigation. State police have declined to release additional details at this time.

Investigators offered a $10,000 reward for information during the shooting of Private Thomas Machia. Masia was on patrol shortly before midnight Wednesday on the westbound highway near Exit 17 in West Hempstead — about a mile from his parents’ home — when he saw a black sedan illegally parked in the lane of the road.

State police said Masia was trying to help what may have been a stranded driver, so the 27-year-old pulled up behind the vehicle, noticed the license plate and got out of his cruiser. As he approached the back of the black sedan, investigators said, the officer heard a series of gunshots and realized he had been shot in the leg.

When the suspect drove off, Masiya hid behind his car. He was later able to treat his wounds with a tourniquet before being taken to hospital. The incident was not recorded on a body camera.

Commander Mascia said the five-year veteran of the state police was struck in the leg by a single gunshot. He underwent surgery and was expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities are looking for a black sedan that Mashia said was involved in the shooting.
