Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a Rohingya man who was in possession of a locally made firearm, five rounds of ammunition and one spent cartridge while returning to Cox’s Bazar refugee camp from Myanmar, said Lt. Col. Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of Teknaf 2. Battalion .

The arrest took place early this morning (November 4) in the Jingehalia area on the Naf River, namely Teknaf.

The detainee, identified as 19-year-old Md Alam, is the son of Habibur Rahman and a resident of Block G-7 in Balukhali 12 Rohingya camp in Uhiya. He went to Myanmar and was returning to Bangladesh when he was arrested.

Lt. Col. Mohiuddin Ahmed stated, “At dawn, BGB personnel spotted a person carrying a small bag and moving towards the shore after crossing the Zero Line at the Naf River. When BGB officers ordered him to stop, he tried to run away, but our team successfully apprehended him after a short chase.”

“During the inspection of the bag, we found one locally-made firearm, five bullets and a shell casing,” he added.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed, the suspect confessed to being part of an organized crime group that operated around the Rohingya camps.

“He admitted that he had previously participated in numerous robberies in markets, shops and houses in Teknaf,” Ahmed said.

Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed confirmed that a case has been registered against the detainee under the relevant laws at the Teknaf Police Station.
