Injuries and damage reported from possible tornado swarm in Oklahoma City area

At least six people were injured and hospitalized Sunday morning, possibly more tornado filled the Oklahoma City area amid tornado warnings issued by authorities, including for the University of Oklahoma’s Norman campus.

One of the twisters is suspected of touching down in Oklahoma City, where most of the injuries are reported to have occurred. Police and firefighters said six victims were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Several structures were damaged, power lines and trees were downed and gas lines were broken as possible twisters tore through the area for four hours starting around 11 p.m. Saturday, Nolan Meister, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS). in Norman, Oklahoma, told ABC News on Sunday morning.

“We believe there were at least six tornadoes and potentially 12,” Meister said, adding that the severe weather also caused flash flooding and large hail in the area.

He said the NWS has confirmed a “couple” of tornadoes and is working to confirm more.

A suspected twister tore through Railhead Estates in Choctaw, causing “extensive damage” to homes and prompting firefighters and police to go door-to-door and check on residents, authorities said in a statement.

Several people reportedly suffered minor injuries in the incident, police said.

“There was significant damage to houses in this area,” the police said in a statement. “We have opened the gymnasium at Choctaw Elementary for anyone who needs a temporary place to rest and shelter.”

The nearby town of Garrah was also devastated, according to the Choctaw Police Department, adding that people were sheltering in a local casino.

Images of damage also appeared Sunday in Newcastle, about 14 miles south of Oklahoma City.

Meister told ABC News that around 9 a.m. ET, all tornado warnings for the area had been lifted. But Meister said the NWS is forecasting more severe weather for the Oklahoma City area Sunday afternoon, including thunderstorms.

Among the emergency tornado warnings issued Sunday was one that prompted students and staff at the University of Oklahoma’s Norman campus to shelter in place, officials said.

The warning was posted at 1:22 a.m. on School X’s official account. The school posted additional warnings at 1:55 a.m. and 2:02 a.m.

“Seek shelter NOW in the building you are in” — first message said “Go to the lowest floor/inside.”

At the time, the NWS said he had a tornado watch across central and eastern oklahoma early sunday. A small area in northwest Texas was also under watch, the agency’s Storm Prediction Center said urgent update at 1:40 am

The center said after about 15 minutes he saw several “discrete superelements” that “matured in the open warm sector in the OK”.

“A tornado watch indicates favorable conditions for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and near the watch area,” the center said. “People in these areas should monitor for threatening weather conditions and heed the following statements and possible warnings.”
