The Isle of Man government says it will not fund the northern landfill

The Isle of Man Infrastructure Department has confirmed it will not pay a £67,000 shortfall on a northern landfill site.

The funding issue arose as a result of the grooms commissioners leaving the Northern Civic Amenity Site (NCAS).

Infrastructure Minister Tim Crookall said other local authorities would have to cover the costs and any increase in inflation themselves.

Mr Crookall said his department would not take over the management of the site without a “clear and legally binding funding mechanism” from all northern authorities.

The minister told the island’s parliament that he hoped it would not come to a point where the site would be handed back to the Department of Infrastructure (DoI). Local Democracy Reporting Service said

Mr Crookall explained that he would attend the NCAS joint committee meeting on November 13 to “find a way forward”.

After Bride commissioners scrapped ratepayer funding, the NCAS board reported in April in order for the government to terminate the lease of the plot.

At the time, Mr Crookall said the Home Office had sent a letter to the board advising on the procedure to be followed in the event of a disagreement with any local authority.

The letter also said: “The department has no commitment to the operation of the community facilities and … the department would be disappointed if the northern local authority decided to close this facility.”

Mr Krukoll told Tynwald: “In relation to the 2025-26 rate setting, the department has advised that it would be prudent for all constituent authorities to make provisions to cover the costs of running the site, as well as increases to cover inflation and unexpected costs.”
