Six arrested after death of woman and over 20 hospitalized after consuming Momos

Hyderabad News: Hyderabad police arrested six people on Wednesday in connection with the death of a woman and the hospitalization of more than 20 people due to suspected food poisoning after consuming momos from different locations of a chain restaurant. The arrests came after complaints from the victims’ families.

Based on the complaint, the Telangana police registered two cases on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and under sections of the BNS Act, PTI reported.

According to NDTV, the incident that shook the entire city started when Reshma Begum, a 31-year-old single mother, and her daughters, aged 12 and 14, were eating momos from a street vendor in Khairatabad on October 25. . Shortly thereafter, the family experienced severe symptoms, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Reshma died on October 27, and her daughters remain under the supervision of doctors.

Police found that around 20 others were also hospitalized after eating momos sold by the same group of vendors at different locations. Officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), with the help of the police, tracked down the vendors and found that the eateries were operating without proper licenses. Food safety officials have since sent samples of the momos to a government lab for analysis.

The GHMC also ordered the vendors to cease operations immediately, stressing strict action against unlicensed and unhygienic food establishments.

Meanwhile, the state’s food safety commissioner has ordered an immediate ban on the production and storage of mayonnaise made from raw eggs, citing repeated cases of food poisoning. However, the ban does not apply to mayonnaise made from pasteurized eggs, provided it complies with safety norms and has a valid FSSAI certificate.

The decision was taken during a review meeting of Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha with the Department of Food Safety.
