Long Island shooting on Southern State Parkway injures trooper – NBC New York

Authorities are investigating the shooting of a New York State trooper on the Southern State Parkway in Long Island, and the man they believe is responsible is still at large.

An officer was patrolling the highway westbound near Exit 17 in West Hempstead shortly before midnight when he saw a black sedan illegally parked on the shoulder, investigators said.

He stopped behind, noticed the license plate and got out of his cruiser. As he approached the back of the black sedan, investigators say, the officer heard a series of gunshots and realized he had been shot in the leg.

He hid behind his car when the suspect drove off. He was later able to treat his wounds on his own before being taken to a hospital, where he was last listed in stable condition. He needed surgery, officials said.

Officials said the suspect fled the scene in what is believed to be a Dodge Charger with the New Jersey license plate NJ 997636T.

State police say they are conducting a full search for the vehicle and are asking anyone with information to call law enforcement.

The highway was temporarily closed in the area to facilitate the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call 631-756-3300.
