1 arrested after Douglas police chase

DOUGLAS, Ga. (Walb). One person is in jail after a pursuit by Douglas police that happened Wednesday night.

According to the incident report, a Douglas police officer spotted a vehicle with license plates matching those of the stolen vehicle. The car failed to move and police chased it south on Peterson Avenue.

Police said they were going to stop the chase with a ditch maneuver, but the suspect slammed on the brakes several times. They say the suspect was speeding toward downtown Douglas at 80 miles per hour.

The officer reported: “I was aware that the pursuit was heading towards Douglas Town Center and that there were people there who might still be involved in the Trick or Trunk activity that had taken place earlier that day. I didn’t want the chase to go further into town, so on North Peterson Avenue near East Wilson Street, I executed a driver’s side ditch maneuver behind the suspect vehicle. I positioned myself on the driver’s side as I knew there were hotels/motels on the right side of the road and I didn’t want to go into that area. The PIT should have sent the driver to the left side of the road, where I knew there was no pedestrian traffic.’

Then the driver drove into a ditch in front of the Oyo Motel.

The driver has been identified as 47-year-old Rashed Carter. The police reported that he was not injured in the accident and is currently in jail.

Carter is charged with failure to maintain lane, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving and other traffic violations.
