Hamilton man charged with manslaughter of mother

A Hamilton man has been convicted of several felonies, including manslaughter, in connection with an alleged violent attack on his 86-year-old mother, who was hospitalized and died from her injuries.

In the news releaseHamilton Police said officers were called to a Hamilton Mountain residence on Thursday, May 31 for reports of a domestic dispute.

Authorities learned that the accused assaulted members of his family that day and that the same man assaulted his 86-year-old mother on Saturday, May 25, in a separate incident. The woman, identified as Milka Shpanovych, was recovering from her injuries at the time.

Gojko Španović, 59, was arrested and charged with several offenses, including aggravated assault, for assaulting his mother. At the time of his arrest, Shpanovich had two separate warrants out for alleged crimes against family members in 2024, police said.

Milka Shpanovych died of her injuries on Thursday, June 6. The homicide unit took over the investigation, and on Wednesday, Oct. 9, investigators linked her death to an attack by her son in May. The police said that the charge of aggravated assault against Gojko Shpanovych was classified as involuntary manslaughter.

Gojko Španović is charged with multiple felonies, including two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of assault (strangulation), four counts of assault, forcible confinement and two counts of uttering death threats, among other charges.

Police said the case is pending in court, and authorities cannot comment on the nature of the attacks or the cause of Milka Shpanovych’s death.
