Air travel professionals reveal the truth about “SSSS” on the boarding pass

An “SSSS” stamp on a boarding pass, which airline buffs on the Internet consider the “kiss of death,” is a sure sign that a traveler’s flight plans may be seriously delayed.

“It stands for ‘secondary security screening option,'” said Zach Griff, senior aviation journalist at New York-based virtual travel hub The Point Guys. told Fox News. “This is a measure implemented by security authorities in the United States to screen certain passengers with additional checks.”

And while most travelers agree that Skyway security is key, many hate the hassle of TSA detention.

“Those selected for this enhanced security are chosen a few days before the flight, when the airlines share the manifest with US security authorities,” Griff said. “SSSS can also be completely random and there is no way to know when you book your flight if you will be selected as SSSS.”
