A man has died after a fire engulfed a house in East Brookfield

A man who moved in a wheelchair died in a a raging fire engulfed a home in East Brookfield early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Emergency crews who responded to a 011 call about a fire at 234 West Main St. just after 3:30 a.m. found heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the single-family home, East Brookfield Fire Chief David Messier said. East Brookfield Police Chief Joseph Lazarick, according to a joint press release from State Fire Marshal John Davin and Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early.

When firefighters entered the home to extinguish the flames, they found the man and threw him outside, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause and manner of his death.

“On behalf of the East Brookfield Fire Department, I want to extend our condolences to the man’s family,” Chief Messier said in a statement. “It’s a very sad day for them and the community.”

Officials said the fire spread quickly, destroying the home in minutes. The structure is recognized as completely destroyed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although Devine said crews did not find any working smoke alarms at the scene.

State police investigators assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office assisted local authorities in the investigation.
