This was the best scene in the Agatha All Along finale, and it’s not even close

Agatha All Along Episode 9 completed the adventure of Agatha Harkness and Billy Maximoff (or Kaplan) on the Witch’s Road.

Unlike others The Marvel Showhowever, it wasn’t an over-the-top, action-packed finale with gratuitous cameos that set up the next 52 chapters in the ever-expanding MCU.

Instead, it was something much more intimate and showrunner-like Jack Schaeffer used the finale to reveal more of Agatha’s backstory, shedding light on who she was before she became the Wicked Witch of Westview. As you might expect, Agatha spent many years of her youth stealing magic from other witches, but the big surprise of this episode was how devoted a mother Agatha was to her son. Mykola Scratchhe is Niki.

We were led to believe that Agatha was a cruel mother who sold her son to Mephisto for the power of the Darkhold, but the truth about Niki’s death turned out to be sadder than we expected, giving us the best scene of the series. .

But before we get to that, we need to understand some of the context surrounding the birth of Nicholas. Turns out poor little Nicky wasn’t really meant for this world and was supposed to die during childbirth. Rio (Mistress of death to you and me), however, because of the love she felt for Agatha, she allowed the child to live.

Agatha and Nicky spend the next six years or so traveling across America, killing witches, raising goats, and creating an incredible song (down, down, on!). All in all, a good time is had by all – that is, until one night when Agta is sleeping, Niki wakes up to find Rio waiting for him, and she finally takes him away.

And then we get the best scene in the show. In the morning, Agatha discovers that her beloved son has died. There are no spectacular duels with Mephisto’s henchmen, no witticisms or daring battles with unfathomable cosmic forces. Nicky just slipped out in the night, and Agatha was lying next to him.

This is a groundbreaking moment and an extremely fact. Anyone who has faced death knows that most of the time it doesn’t happen the way we’ve been taught to expect in the movies. There is not always a night vigil, knowing tears of grief or touching last words. Some people just go to sleep and never wake up.

We all need more time

For a Marvel show – I love the MCU, but let’s face it, subtle drama has never been its strong suit – to pull off such a raw dramatic moment was genuinely surprising, especially in a series as silly as Agatha All Along.

It certainly helps to have a talented actor like Kathryn Hahn playing Agatha, and she did a great job in that moment. It’s not overexertion or sugar. These are just the desperate cries of a woman used to feeling powerful and above everyone, trying to wake her son up, knowing that even with all her magic, she can’t bring him back.

That’s why I loved this scene and think it’s the best moment in the show. It contains so much of what Agatha All Along is about. It sums up the universal need we all feel to be close to those we’ve lost, how many of us use grief to push us to do the impossible, and the tragic truth that grief can make us do the unthinkable.
