The accused, arrested on Sunday, initially tried to mislead the investigators by claiming that he was a resident of Kolkata. However, the police exposed his lie and got his school leaving certificate from his brother, who lives in Bangladesh, on his mobile phone, the official said.

This certificate was a strong proof of the Bangladeshi citizenship of the 30-year-old accused, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, who changed his name to Vijay Das.

“After committing the crime (January 16), Fakir hid in the garden of the building of Satguru Sharan, where Saif Ali Khan lives with his family for about two hours because he was afraid of being caught,” the official said, referring to a preliminary investigation.

According to him, the accused entered Khan’s apartment because he was looking for a lot of money.

The official, however, did not confirm whether the accused knew that Khan was living on the upper floors of the building and decided to commit the theft. Fakir was arrested in Thane three days after the brutal attack.

“After being nabbed by the police, Fakir told the police that his name was Vijay Das and he was a resident of Kolkata. However, he did not provide any document to support his claim. He revealed his real name and Bangladeshi nationality during interrogation,” the official said.

The police then forced the fakir to call someone in his family in Bangladesh. “He called his brother and asked him to send his school residence certificate. His brother sent it (certificate) to Fakir’s mobile phone. This document is a strong proof that he is a Bangladeshi citizen,” the official added.

Khan, 54, was stabbed several times in the attack and underwent a five-hour operation at a nearby Lilavati Hospital. According to doctors, he is recovering well.

On Sunday, Fakir was taken into custody for five days. Police are likely to recreate the crime scene at Khan’s residence along with the accused, an official said on Sunday.
