A New Bedford school van driver has been charged with driving under the influence

NEW BEDFORD. The driver of a school van faces a number of charges, including operating under the influence of alcohol and endangering a child, after Massachusetts State Police say they received a report of erratic driving and pulled her over on Route 140 in New Bedford on Tuesday afternoon.

According to State policeRebecca Shing, 34, of Somerset, was pulled over around 2:30 p.m. after a Grand Caravan with school bus plates was reported driving erratically on Route 140 in New Bedford. State police confirmed that there were four children on board at the time.

Shing was brought to court New Bedford Circuit Court on Wednesday, according to Jennifer Sova of the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. She will return on November 29 for a pre-trial conference. Her bond was set at $1,000, Sova wrote in an email.

The driver’s fees, according to Sova, are as follows:

  • negligent handling of vehicles;
  • violation of marked lanes;
  • acting under the influence;
  • three counts of endangering a child while working while intoxicated

State police did not respond to additional requests, such as which bus company the driver worked for or which school she attended at the time of her arrest. The Owl said it could not comment beyond the above information.
