I finally watched the 2019 horror movie Mom and it’s weirder than expected

I like silly horror movies, especially when they involve the absurd. That’s why some of my favorite movies are also some of the best comedy horror movies. I love the exciting mix of grotesque and fun. However, sometimes it’s hard to tell when a horror movie is funny by choice or because of the consequences of poorly executed decisions. mother it’s a movie I’ve never seen because I thought it was a horror comedy at first and then found out otherwise. While some may think this is ridiculous, it is not by choice of film.

The initial reviews had it in mind mother it’s a simple psychological thriller that makes some decisions that don’t work. He became infamous for not trying to be funny but still succeeding. The mother the memes piqued my interest, but I waited until 2024 to finally watch it. Watching mother it was a weirder movie than I expected. Let me explain.

The victim is the antagonist

No one prepared me for motherhood (Octavia Spencer) tragic background. I knew the other teenagers had done something to trigger her mental breakdown and that was the driving force behind her revenge. You can make that assumption just by watching the trailer. However, I expected something similar Carriea terrible prank gone wrong, but technically nothing criminal. What happened to Sue Ann is sexual abuse. She willingly engages in oral sex, but is tricked and forced into it. Sue Ann thought she was having sex with her lover, but the students tricked her into having sex with someone else. This is a textbook example of sexual violence.

mother doesn’t fully approach the subject deeply because it’s never given the seriousness it deserves. In fact, none of the children who became adults seem so remorseful. Erica (Juliette Lewis) apologizes, but it doesn’t come across as sincere or sincere. After learning Ma’s backstory, I sympathized with her. I also wished the movie didn’t make her this completely cartoonish villain. It took away some of Sue Ann’s endearing aspects. Also, sexually assaulting Ma almost makes her a villain with an understandable motive.

But alas, Sue Ann squanders that sympathy by becoming too diabolical. With such a talented actress like Octavia Spencer, mother could have really made his story more emotionally impactful and engaging. It could have been different excellent performance by Octavia Spencer.

Instead, there was no such feeling mother sufficiently addressed the tragedy of this incident. It felt more like a plot device than an attempt to say something profound about trauma.

But it’s still crazy, she’s having beef with the kids

No one can deny that a crime happened to Sue Ann. However, this does not justify her behavior. Eventually, she develops a rivalry with the children, especially Maggie (Diane Silvers), whose mother is the least involved in everything that happened to Sue Ann.

Sue Ann is victimized by a criminal. This type of progression sometimes happens with some victims, but the film seems to diminish her compassion by making her attack innocent children. Besides, mother tries to make us root for Sue Ann and even cheer when Maggie hits her. I didn’t cheer. I wanted Sue Ann to survive and get the proper care she clearly needed.

Also, the fact that she is still after the parents makes her attack on the children even more questionable. If she’s only going after the kids, you might think of this act as true to the “sins of the parents fall on the children” ideology, but since she’s punishing teenagers and parents, it seems less impactful.

She seems to want to hurt everyone. It would have been more biblical if Sue Ann had only targeted the younger generation and made the parents suffer in this way. Her actions are wrong in every way, but it only makes sense thematically to harm children. Her quarrel with teenagers is motherthe most inconvenient element.

Mom was always uncomfortable to look at

Children can sometimes be naive or too trusting. They can also be just plain dumb. Children in mother feel really stupid because Sue Ann automatically raises red flags. However, they ignore them for most of the movie because they like it when she buys them alcohol and lets them hang out in her basement. One of motherThe most memorable moments are when she forced Chaz (Gianni Paolo) to strip by pointing a gun at him.

She claims that the gun is not loaded, and the children then laugh at the incident. She also inappropriately touches Andy (Corey Fogelmanis) and Darrell (Dante Brown) several times. Ma often gives predator mood, but children ignore it. Spencer does a good job with the character because she exudes a nasty aura from the start. mother never makes you root for Sue Ann, even when you empathize with her pain. She’s just too intolerable to support.

I wasn’t expecting a Munchausen plot on assignment

People who know the story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard or have seen this act Act I know of one of the saddest cases of Munchausen by proxy, which is a disorder where a person makes up or even causes an illness to another person they care for. mother Screenwriter Scott Lands may have been inspired by the story of Gypsy Rose, as the plot of Sue Ann poisoning her daughter Ginny (Tanielle Wavers) to make her sick is very similar to the story of Gypsy, including the part where Gypsy tries to stop Ma by helping to kill her .

Even just watching Act trailerit seems clear mother is inspired by this famous story. Sue Ann is already a diabolical villain, so she makes it even worse by intentionally harming her daughter. It feels like a side plot that isn’t needed, but helps establish Ma as such a memorable thief.

I found random Ma children torturing their mouths

mother kills characters in no hurry, but then goes full force. Each murder scene becomes more gruesome. There are only about two of them, but they are very memorable death scenes. Then the scenes of torture of children become even more uncomfortable and memorable. Sue Ann burns out Chaz’s chest with an iron, paints Darrell white and sews up Hayley’s (McKaley Miller) lips.

She then kissed Andy before stabbing him. It’s very extreme and hard to watch, especially considering that all these actors are playing teenagers and look like them. mother really supports the “do everything and see what happens” philosophy. In many ways, it’s a respectable decision to go completely crazy with the plot and action, but it also does mother uncomfortable and painful viewing.
