A woman filed a complaint of cruelty after a suicide attempt in Muluga

Hyderabad: A woman from the city, who was found unconscious after an apparent suicide attempt in Mulugu on Saturday while she was searching for her husband, who was absconding, has lodged a complaint against her in-laws for brutality at the Alwala police station.

According to police sources, the husband, who is in hiding, left her after marriage because he found her to be “too advanced” to fit into his family. The couple professes different religions.

The woman told the media on Sunday that she was constantly harassed by her in-laws who allegedly told her that they would marry their son to a woman who was “richer”.

According to investigating officer Mulugu Vijay, the woman was staying in Bengaluru in a self-paying guest house at a distance from her home. In 2023, she contacted the accused, who works in a technical specialty, through a social network and started a relationship. They got married in January this year in Bengaluru,

“After the couple moved to the husband’s residence in Alval, his family constantly harassed her. They did not accept her at first as she belonged to a different religion,” said Vijay. “After a few months, they accepted her and decided to marry them again. Now the husband refuses to marry her. On December 5, he approached the Alwala police with a complaint of harassment by his wife,” said Vijay.

“The Alwala police consulted them and told them about the legality of their marriage. On Saturday morning, the man told his family and wife that he would end his life by suicide and left the house.”

While searching for him, his wife reportedly reached Shamirpet, suggesting that her husband might have gone to the lake there. When she couldn’t find him, she reportedly attempted suicide.

Locals spotted her and tried to stop her, but she reportedly chased them away. They called the Mulugu police who arrived at the scene and took her to the government hospital for treatment.

After her condition became stable, a judge arrived at the hospital to record her statement. “Since Turkapalla area falls under our jurisdiction, we asked the woman about the case and asked if she wanted to register a case. She refused and said she would get counseling and return to her family as she wanted to live with her husband,” SI reported.

“I even called her husband, who, as far as I know, is now at large. First he chose the call. We informed him about his wife, but he did not react well,” the SI reported.

The woman arrived at the Alwala police station where she was counseled on Sunday. After that, the woman agreed to file a complaint. Alwala police have registered a case under section 85 of BNS (cruelty to women by husband, kith and kin), Alwala police said.
