After the accident in Tewkesbury, charges were brought against a newly graduated military man

Local news

James Doran, 27, was arrested Sunday night in Tewksbury.

A man who recently graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy has been charged with driving under the influence after he allegedly crashed into another car Sunday night in Tewksbury, WBZ reports.

James Doran, 27, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, according to court records. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Tewksbury Police responded to a crash on Main Street near Clark Road around 11:00 p.m. Sunday night, according to WBZ. The car registered to Doran, who was driving, crashed into the back of another vehicle, police said, and officers said the 27-year-old man and another man in his car were both unsteady on their feet, slurred and smelling of alcohol.

Court documents say Doran’s passenger initially claimed he was driving, but officers found the man’s phone on the passenger side floor, WBZ reported. Damage to the windshield on the passenger side was also allegedly consistent with a cut on the man’s head.

Doran later allegedly told police he had been driving and had “a few drinks.” He allegedly refused a breath test and field sobriety test, WBZ reported.

Doran graduated from the police academy on October 9 and worked at the Leominster barracks, according to the station. He was in the same class as Enrique Delgado-Garciawho died on September 13 after becoming unresponsive during training.

New state troopers are on probation with the department for a year after graduating from the academy, WBZ reported.

Doran was arraigned Monday, according to court records. He was ordered to surrender his driver’s license and will return to court in early December.
