A Chicago man has been charged after a shootout with police in West Rogers Park

CHICAGOA 22-year-old man has been charged after one shooting led to another exchange of fire with Chicago police in West Rogers Park Saturday morning.

Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi is charged with more than a dozen felonies, including six counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of shooting a police officer or firefighter and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Abdallahi walked up to a 39-year-old man and shot him without saying a word in the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue around 9:30 a.m., according to Chicago police. When officers and medics arrived at the scene, Abdallahi allegedly fired at them. several times from different places. The police returned fire and shot Abdallahi dead.

None of the officers and firefighters were injured. Abdallahi was arrested about 30 minutes after the first shooting in the 6800 block of North Washtenaw Avenue. He was taken to the district hospital in serious condition.

Neighbors said that the victim was going to his synagogue before the shooting. He was shot in the shoulder and released from the hospital, police said.

So far, Chicago police have said they will not file hate crime charges until evidence proves otherwise.

“We have to find out the motive of the crime,” Snelling said.

The police reported that a weapon was found at the scene. According to CPD, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on regular administrative duties for at least 30 days as part of department protocol.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating and anyone with more information is asked to call COPA at 312-746-3609.

A hearing on Abdallahi’s detention was scheduled for Tuesday.
